Toi Ora
Toi Ora – the pinnacle of wellbeing – aims to improve Māori health outcomes by focusing on overall hauora.
He aha a Toi Ora?
What is Toi Ora?
Beyond health insurance, Toi Ora is an ecosystem of navigation, programs, and processes, centred on a Māori perspective of health.
Using data and our kaiārahi (navigators), our Māori health framework ensures that whānau have a holistic journey covering their treatment, health coaching and iwi or kaimahi programs.
We know that what we do works – from the data we receive, to our social return on investment, and most importantly through whānau feedback.
nib is proud to have co-developed this kaupapa alongside Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, our foundation partner.
nib Toi Ora Programme
Did you know? Toi Ora has a 220% social return on investment*, signalling our ongoing commitment to breaking down financial barriers to affordable health insurance for whānau.

Ko wai mātou?
Who are we?
nib’s Iwi Initiatives team is dedicated to providing whānau with mana-enhancing, accessible, subsidised health cover. We’re excited to properly connect with you, understand your needs, and work towards closing the gap between Māori and non-Māori health outcomes, together.

“I enjoy connecting with whānau and ensuring their journey through the healthcare system goes as smoothly as possible…. meeting whānau in person who have benefitted from their health insurance, has been nothing short of amazing.”
– Rawinia, nib kaiārahi

Whānau stories
Katrina’s story
Katrina Allen experienced support from nib first-hand after an aneurysm was found on her brain during a hospital visit. Feeling overwhelmed after her diagnosis, Katrina wasn’t sure what the next steps would be. Our Wellness Coaches were able to help Katrina with the next stages of her healthcare journey, offering ongoing personalised support.
Jamie’s story
After experiencing back pain and numbness in his feet, a visit to the GP ended up in multiple specialist appointments which revealed the need for lower spine surgery and around the same time Jamie was also diagnosed with two forms of cancer. Fortunately he had health insurance with nib, and was put onto our Cancer Care Programme.
Te ao Māori ki nib
Te Ao Māori at nib
Te Hononga
In 2017, we began a new journey to evolve the way we connect with te ao Māori. This evolved into the development of our ‘Te Hononga’.
This guides our journey to strengthening our relationship with te ao Māori, beginning with our cornerstone relationship with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the development of Toi Ora and our Māori health framework, and our core pillars that underpin our approach to working with Māori rōpū.
Our team are supported by our nib Reo Ora app, designed by Kiwa Digital. This ensures that across the business we have the skills to support our Toi Ora members.
We would like to acknowledge the mahi of the key people and organisations who have been part of our journey and have been instrumental in the creation of Te Hononga and nib Reo Ora.
Tohu Toi Ora
Tohu Toi Ora is an accreditation designed to recognise medical providers who nib, together with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, believe promote a culturally responsive and inclusive health care environment for Māori.
Beyond just Māori health providers, accreditation is based off responses to a questionnaire about their approach to care for Māori patients, and support of Māori culture and health.
Also called the Toi Ora tick, members will see this mark next to the name of accredited providers when they use our Find a Provider directory.
