At nib New Zealand, we’re here to empower our members to take better proactive care of their health and wellbeing.
That’s why we’ve partnered with a suite of specialist providers* to deliver our complimentary Health Management Programmes. These programmes are available to eligible nib members**, designed to help them better manage and improve chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal conditions, or to provide additional support in the wake of a cancer diagnosis.
This is the story of long-time nib member, Glenn, and his journey to being free from back pain with nib’s Healthier Joints Pain Management programme.
After five years of suffering, Glenn’s back pain reached its peak in mid 2019. Having endured two unsuccessful surgeries (including a major procedure in March 2019), he was left unable to stand without support, struggling to walk, and missing out on the things he most loved in life – trout fishing and playing with his young grandchildren.
It was in June 2019 that Glenn was first contacted by an nib Wellness Coach, as a follow up to his surgery earlier that year, and during that phone call he was invited to take part in nib’s Healthier Joints Pain Management programme.
The programme is specially designed for those aged between 18 and 80 who suffer from acute back, neck, shoulder, hip or knee pain. Over the course of 9 – 12 weeks participants receive a personalised rehabilitation and activity programme, delivered by a qualified physiotherapist, to help manage their pain and symptoms, and increase strength and mobility.
Glenn began his tailored programme in July 2019, and quickly began to see positive results.
Glenn says, “When I first met the physio, she asked me a lot of questions about my mobility, my pain – and I guess she geared the whole physio programme around what I could and couldn’t do. I would say it was very innovative. I started to see results probably after about two weeks, it changed everything.”
Since completing the programme, Glenn’s back pain has been greatly reduced, enabling him to regain mobility and get back to doing the things he loves.
“The first time I got back out on the river again was a huge relief. I know it’s only fishing. Some guys might see it that way, but to me it’s a huge part of my life and I couldn’t think of a better time – I really couldn’t. I’m very grateful,” says Glenn.
